How Audio Visual Systems Can Improve Student Learning & School Safety

When you install the technological infrastructure to support advancing audio visual systems, you unlock a variety of valuable AV functions that can benefit your school and its students. AV systems can facilitate announcements, assemblies, and classroom instruction, as well as improve school safety and security. For these reasons, schools can benefit enormously from high-quality audio visual systems. Let’s review the beneficiary applications of audio visual systems in educational settings. How AV Systems Support Student Learning Classroom Instruction Visual aids are a favorite instructional tool for many educators and have been for eons. When you were a student, did your schoolteachers wheel out hefty TVs and VCRs on carts to show you supplementary learning materials? Did they use a projector or cassettes? The technology has changed from generation to generation, but teachers will always appreciate the ability to incorporate visual and auditory assets into their lessons. This is because these aids promote student engagement and appeal to multiple learning styles, allowing teachers to more effectively teach all of their students at once. Interactive whiteboards and smart TVs are today’s slide projectors, with immense potential to augment student learning. Teachers can use these technologies to present slide decks, display images, play videos, and more. AV systems in classrooms are a tool for teachers to augment their instruction, keep students engaged, and cater to a variety of educational needs. Other School Functions Audio visual systems enable educators in a variety of capacities. PA systems empower administrators to make announcements and share information. AV systems in spaces such as auditoriums can support school assemblies to better inform students of critical issues facing their communities and peer groups. Students enrolled in after-school activities can utilize the school’s AV systems for their meetings and events. Across the board, audio visual technologies in schools see incredible amounts of use. How AV Systems Support School Security & Student Safety Audio visual technology and IT infrastructure not only benefits student learning—it also improves the reliability of school security systems. IT infrastructure enables video security systems by providing the operational basis for cameras and video feeds. PA systems can be utilized to notify school occupants of threats and instruct them on how to proceed. IT infrastructure in schools can also be used to install emergency points across campus, which are tall metal poles with intercoms that allow students to contact security personnel if they’re in danger. Additionally, AV technology, such as digital signage, can be leveraged in drills to help students with direction and prepare for potential emergencies. AV technology makes it easy for administrators to bolster their school’s security measures and disseminate information regarding school safety and security to teachers, staff, and students. CTCI Provides Integrated School Security Systems

CTCI has over 35 years of experience as the top progressive integrator of customized IT, AV, and security solutions for commercial, industrial, and educational applications in the New York metropolitan area. Over the course of those nearly 40 years in business, we’ve worked with a number of school districts and educational institutions to design, install, integrate, and service exceptionally robust, high-tech security systems. Our Solutions We offer a wide range of security solutions and have installed various security technology including Code Blue Help Points, turnstiles, lockdown alarm systems, and more. Our most popular security technologies, however, are access control, CCTV-capable cameras, and intercom systems with paging capabilities. These are the security solutions we most commonly install in schools. Past Client Successes For one past school security client, Commercial Technology was contracted to design and build a new control access and video system from the ground up. For this project, we installed a total of 180 cameras with video management via our NetVR platform across eight different school locations. We also converted 32 building entrances and exits to controlled access doors. Another school district client had a system with 140 cameras and 20 controlled access doors that had previously been installed by another provider, but required a capable new integrator; Commercial Technology is now the integrator of record for the system and has been responsible for service, maintenance, and the installation of several additional controlled access doors. Cameras and CCTV Video surveillance school security systems can offer both internal and external visibility so that school security personnel and administrators can view potentially threatening activities within the school or at its exterior. One system can serve any number of related locations, which makes this sort of security ideal for public school districts that need to protect and monitor multiple school sites. Integrated Control Access Systems Control access systems can integrate with video systems and, in primary and secondary educational institutions, often do. Controlled access doors can keep out unwanted visitors and potential intruders using multiple methods. One is card access, which requires authorized occupants to swipe or scan their access cards in order to enter the building. This is better suited to commercial facilities and higher educational institutions. The other major variety of controlled access doors is one that integrates with video surveillance and intercom systems. This method allows office or security staff to view live footage of would-be entrants to the building and communicate with them via an intercom system in order to ascertain their identity and purpose for attempting to enter the school. If the staff determines that the person outside is a potential threat, they do not need to open the doors. Visitors are only able to enter the building if the doors are electronically unlocked using the internal system. Contact CTCI Today Looking for security technology solutions for your school? Why Security System Maintenance Matters

When you invest in a security system you are relying on that technology to fulfill an extremely important function: keeping your people & property safe. The unfortunate reality of technology is that it does require maintenance, and systems without care often fail. It is important to understand that to keep your systems functioning properly both predictive and preventative maintenance are required. The Set it and forget it simply will not work. The solution? Routine maintenance by a certified technician. Your security system is no different from any other device in the matter of wear and tear. Over time, security system components are known to deteriorate. It is imperative to maintain all these components, including security cameras, access control systems, proximity sensors, doors, latches, and so forth, in order to ensure their proper function and provide your property and your employees with a safe work environment. These systems must also be updated with the latest firmware and software version. The lack of a current Software license agreement will limit functionality and prohibit the expansion of the system. Often systems that have not been updated are more susceptible to cyber and software breaches. Preventing possible failures of your security system is a way to avoid unwanted situations that could have a dramatic effect. In the event that one of the cameras or sensors within your system is not working, you now have a vital gap that allows intruders to enter your facility without your knowledge. To protect your people and your assets, it is beneficial to enroll in a routine security system maintenance program. But what does that look like? The details of your security system’s routine maintenance can depend on a few factors, such as the specs of your technology and your technology provider’s offerings. Commercial Technology’s OnCommand program is designed to provide custom, comprehensive support and maintenance solutions. The Critical Need for Air Quality and Vape Sensor Integration in Schools

Vaping has become a significant challenge within our educational institutions, not only impacting student health but also contributing to disciplinary and safety concerns. In recent times, the National Youth Tobacco Survey revealed alarming statistics with 14.5 percent of high schoolers and 3.3 percent of middle schoolers engaged in e-cigarette use. For education leaders and school administrators who bear the responsibility of ensuring a safe and conducive learning environment, these numbers cannot be ignored. The adoption of Air Quality and Vape Sensor devices, such as the HALO Smart Sensor 2C, is an innovative solution that addresses multiple facets of this multifaceted challenge. This blog will discuss why such technology is becoming indispensable and how it bolsters the mission of safeguarding our schools. The Purpose Behind Vape Detectors in Schools Schools have historically contended with students smoking on premises—an issue that has evolved into the use of vaping devices. Vaping poses a significant threat to students, particularly those in middle and high school. Nicotine addiction, impact on brain development, and overall school performance are just a few of the concerns associated with vaping. Furthermore, it sets a precedent for breaking rules and encourages a culture of dishonesty and substance abuse. Vape detectors are not merely gadgets; they are guardians of the school’s atmosphere – both the physical air and the educational ethos. The purpose of installing vape detectors is to monitor air quality for abnormal compounds typical of vape emissions. Much like the traditional smoke detectors that warn against a fire hazard, vape detectors serve to nip a new-age problem in the bud. The Proof is in the Results! As presented in EdTech Magazine, the Newark Central School District in New York, faced significant hurdles associated with student vaping, including increased physical altercations and property damage. The deployment of HALO Smart Sensor 2C devices across their campuses proved to be a game-changer, drastically curtailing incidents of vaping and reducing student loitering in target areas. Such real-time monitoring devices, when integrated with existing security systems, offer a layered approach to mitigating vaping-related issues. When HALO sensors detect THC or nicotine use in an area like a restroom, automated alerts are sent to security personnel who can then promptly respond. Additionally, the integration with security cameras records relevant footage to aid in identifying individuals involved.
